Australian Racing Group will tomorrow announce a new naming rights deal for the revived TCR Australia Series.

By MARK FOGARTY

AUTO ACTION has learned that a major automotive retail brand will take over from web site carsales.com.au as title sponsor of the six-race TCR championship.

The two-litre turbo terriers are returning with big new backing in Tasmania at the end of this month after sitting out 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Full details will be in the first issue of AA in 2021, available for purchase in digital form from this evening (Wednesday).

The print edition will be on sale at the usual outlets from tomorrow (Thursday).

AA’s revelation comes amid speculation about where disaffected stalwart Supercars sponsor Supercheap Autos will direct its support.

The retail automotive parts and accessories giant has lost its long-time Bathurst 1000 naming rights to aftermarket arch-rival Repco, which has also gained title sponsorship of the Supercars championship.

Supercars team backer Boost Mobile has already defected to ARG, sponsoring the season-starting Race Tasmania double-header at the end of the month.

Supercheap Auto has left Tickford Racing as a main car sponsor, securing prominent front and rear signage on the Triple Eight Commodores.

There is also talk Supercheap will provide subsidiary support to other V8 entries.

A new national-name title sponsor for TCR is a big deal as the worldwide turbo two-litre touring car class returns after no racing in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Leading automotive web site carsales.com.au backed the inaugural TCR Australia Series in 2019, establishing the category as a low-cost alternative to Supercars.

Along with ARG’s S5000, TCM and Trans Am, TCR will be shown live and free on the Seven Network.

TCR Australia has attracted factory support from Hyundai, Honda and Renault, with the growing field also including Alfa Romeos, Subarus, Opels and VWs.
