ON NOVEMBER 15-17 Wakefield Park will celebrate a significant milestone with the 25th Anniversary of the circuit’s first meeting.

The special commemorative race meeting has been scheduled as closely as possible to November 20, the date when the circuit was officially opened by NSW Premier John Fahey in 1994. Then Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jack Brabham completed the first official laps of the track.

Organised by the Historic Sports and Racing Car Association (HSRCA) and Golden Era Auto Racing (GEAR) clubs in conjunction with Wakefield Park, the meeting will feature historic racing, sports and touring cars of the same eras that participated there 25 years ago.

Around 10 drivers from the original meeting will be in attendance, as will several officials. The celebrations will also take place in Goulburn on Friday night, where competitors, staff members and volunteers past and present will gather at the Goulburn Workers Club.

Special guests at the function will include one of circuit’s founders, John Carter, along with family members of the other founder, the late Paul Samuels.

Wakefield Park circuit manager Dean Chapman said HSRCA and GEAR have been instrumental in creating a successful 25th anniversary race meeting.

“HSRCA organised the very first meeting at Wakefield Park, while GEAR evolved from Paul Samuels’ desire to have mid-week events for owners of historic cars to drive around the venue,” said current circuit manager Dean Chapman.

“Both these clubs have maintained a line of communication with many of the competitors and officials who were there at Wakefield Park for the very first race meeting in 1994, and they have played a vital role in reaching out to these people and ensuring we have a level of support fitting of such a momentous occasion.

“The support from the Goulburn region and the wider community has been fantastic and shows just how much Wakefield Park has become a major contributor to the economy since it was built in 1994.

“We’ve also had a lot of interest from various motorsport groups, who want to be part of the celebrations – it shows that Wakefield Park is a track that people enjoy racing at.”

Trackside spectator admission for this special Anniversary race meeting will be free over the weekend. Tickets for the anniversary dinner are still available and can be purchased online.
