After finishing second in last year’s Kumho Super3 series for Matt White Motorsport, Zak Best had been expected to make the step up to Super2 this season following his teammate Tyler Everingham who won the title.

However, Best finds himself competing in his second year in third-tier series of Supercar racing with the MW Motorsport squad.

Best said that although conversations with the team occurred about a potential Super2 drive, the team felt it would be better if he stayed put.

“It was in the pipeline, there were talks about going to Super2,” Best told Auto Action. “We’d have liked to but we got told to hang around for a bit.”

The former Aussie Racing Car driver hopes that MW Motorsport will promote him to the Dunlop Super2 Series for the 2020 season.

“Next year I’m definitely looking to move up and get out of here.

“I’d like to (move up with the team) but you never know what happens,” Best said.

Despite the setback, the Benalla born teenager sees many positives in not making the step up this season.

“It was good to come back this year in the same car, same engineers, same group of guys working on the car, it helps a lot, nothing new to learn.

“I’m just trying to improve myself, the car is always fantastic, the boys do a great job,” he said.

In 2019 the goal for Best is simply to claim the title and Best feels the best way to do this is to be consistent throughout the year.

“Goal has to be the championship, the big picture just being consistently top three the whole year and keep getting the points and poles will definitely help with that,” he explained

Best’s experience in the cars paid dividends in the wet and slippery conditions that greeted the Super3 Series at Winton Motor Raceway winning both of the races on a very wet Saturday. On Sunday when leading Best suffered a mechanical failure which ground his Falcon to a halt with victory almost in his sight.
