How SCT’s first Triple Eight driver will be picked

Jamie Whincup and Andrew Jones

By Thomas Miles

With the SCT Motorsport program heading to Triple Eight, the next question is who will land the suddenly most sought-after seat on the 2026 Supercars grid.

Having been run at Brad Jones Racing since 2020, SCT Motorsport has shifted its Racing Entitlements Contract over to frontrunners Triple Eight.

Although the SCT car has never finished higher than 21st in the championship, the prospect of racing at the record-breaking Triple Eight is one few drivers will shy away from.

With Jaxon Evans being moved on, the seat is vacant for 2026.

SCT Motorsport Head of Programs Andrew Jones said a decision is yet to be named on who will be the face of the team’s new era.

“Today is all about just announcing that SCT Motorsport is partnering with Triple Eight Race Engineering,” Jones said.

“We want to make sure that we give each step in this process the right amount of air to be able to have its time.

“I’m a process guy. I don’t like things with grey areas, so this purely is around two teams joining together with the desire to succeed.”

The likes of Super2 youngsters Zach Bates, Rylan Gray and Jackson Walls have all been linked to the drive.

While it is an SCT Motorsport entry, Jones made it clear Triple Eight will also have a say in the big decision.

He also confirmed the conversations have already begun.

“I think in all good partnerships, open communication is key, and we’ve had discussions around it,” Jones said.

“I’ve been absolutely having conversations with Jamie around who is the preferred option to drive the car and under this entity, and we need their buy-in.

“One thing he said to me during one of our discussions is, ‘we work through it’.

“If there’s a problem, we speak about it, we try and find a solution.

“The bit that I really like about this so far is one of his answers is, ‘okay, no worries, we’ve done our due diligence, now we’re all-in’.

“So yes, we’ve had conversations around who the driver will look like.

“We have planned for that. We have prepped for that, and at the right time we’ll announce that.”
