Campbell takes historic IMSA title

Matt Campbell wins IMSA crown

By Timothy Neal

Aussie driver Matthew Campbell can now call himself an IMSA Sportscar champion in earnest, achieving a historic title at the pinnacle of the Porsche Pyramid after leaving Atlantas Petit Le Mans as the GTP trophy holder.

Campbell – a hang-tough driver in a hang-tough year – has added a second IMSA title to his resume, but this was his first at the very top.

His rise into the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) class for Porsche Penske in 2023 has seen him shifted to the World Endurance Championship and back, driving the LMDh 963 machine; and after being transferred back to his preferred full-time role on the North American continent for 2025, the payoff and familiar surroundings have proved immense.

His win at the Pinnacle of North American Prototype racing is also the first for an Australian since David Brabham went back-to-back in 2009-2010 (American Le Mans Series) in LMP1, when he joined four-time champion Geoff Brabham (1988-1991, IMSA GT Championship) as the only other Aussie winner.

Alongside Frenchman Matthieu Jaminet, a third place finish at Road Atlantas Petit Le Mans was enough to seal the championship over the #31 Cadillac and the #7 sister Penske 963 after the latter had started the year with three straight victories.

Phenomenal to get another championship with Mathieu,Campbell said of their pair’s success.

That’s two years in IMSA partnering together and two championships, so very proud of that.

Doing it next to a good friend with Mathieu, we’ve formed a really good partnership over the last years. Even though we might not have driven together in the last couple, coming back together this year it’s worked phenomenally, and we’ve really hit the ground running.
