Bulls bash in co-driver practice

Scott Pye and Jamie Whincup crash at The Bend

By Thomas Miles

Triple Eight teammates Jamie Whincup and Scott Pye sensationally collided in the fourth Supercars practice, topped by James Moffat.

Pye and Whincup made significant contact during a trial of the new Safety Car procedure, where confusion reigned with the Triple Eight Camaros coming together.

The trail saw a simulated incident at Turn 6, causing drivers to slow down at the board on the exit of the opening chicane.

Pye was in front and braked hard coming out of Turn 3, only for an unsuspecting Whincup to whack the rear of his teammate.

The significant contact sent the two Bulls spinning into the paddock, with Pye forced to crawl back to the pits with a destroyed rear left wheel assembly, while Whincup somehow carried on for the rest of the session.

The cause for the odd incident was the new Full Course Yellow system, with Pye explaining the confusion over the timing of the release, which is why he was braking and Whincup was not.

“They are tricky and learnt there,” he said.

“I asked the question to (Engineer) Andrew (Edwards), but there is no countdown for the release.

“I learnt the lesson there, you cant use the radio because if they say release at any point, you may miss it.

“Then with the slow zone, Jamie maybe missed the board at the exit of 3, being relatively close to me.

“I braked real hard to maximise my delta time, and he was just caught out and hit me in the rear.

“There is a Fair bit of damage and it is a complicated system.”

After 10 eventful, but quiet minutes on the leaderboard, the field started putting the foot down when it finally went green.

McLeod opened the batting with a 1:51.6199 before his wildcard teammate wowed.

Seton put his famous name back in P1 for a period as his 1:51.5142 was just enough to stay ahead of Fabian Coulthard.

Another wildcard was at the top at the 20-minute mark in Tickford youngster Gray, who found an extra two and a half tenths.

Soon it was the turn of the veterans as Holdsworth became the first to record a 1m50s time of the session with Moffat a tenth back.

Teams then settled into long race runs as it was not until the final four minutes that the pace switched to top-notch.

Moffat and Gray joined Holdsworth in the 1m50s club, with the #55 veteran going a tenth clear of the Team 18 driver.

Moffat’s 1:51.1648 was clearly the lap of the session with Holdsworth 0.1864s back, while Seton and Zach Bates ensured there were three wildcards in the top five.

This proved to be the final blow of a dramatic session where teams now have a lot to think about with just one more practice at midday before qualifying.
