Canto name returns to racing

The Canto name will return to the Australian racing scene this weekend with Dylan, son of Dean, ready for a “baptism of fire.”
The 17-year-old Dylan Canto will make his racing debut in the fifth round of the Radical Cup Australia season at The Bend.
The round will be held in the SpeedSeries spotlight at the South Australian venue, a week before Supercars roll into town.
Currently completing year 12 at Unley High School in Adelaide’s inner Southern suburbs, it will be a home race for Canto in the Radical SR3XX.
The Bend is also the scene of Dean Canto’s motorsport preparation and driver coaching business, while he will also perform duties in Race Control.
Dean was a veteran of 156 Supercars starts from 2001-2019 highlighted by a breakthrough win alongside David Reynolds at Gold Coast 2013.
His former rival Luke Youlden will be helping out the youngster as engineer.
Dean Canto explained the drive is a present for his son following his commitment in the classroom.
“He’s (Dylan) a great kid and this is a bit of a reward for his efforts at school and in year 12,” Canto Snr said.
“It’s a bit of a baptism of fire but the Radicals are such a great, cost-effective way to have some fun, to compete and to learn the ropes.
“He’s not had a lot of experience at all – some karting and some time behind the wheel of my Subaru BRZ drive school car – but he had a massive test day in the Radical last week.
“He did 420km in a single day and we just put fuel in, checked the tyre pressures and sent it. He did a good job.”
