Walls ends Super2 day on top

Jackson Walls tops Super2 practice

By Thomas Miles

Jackson Walls emerged fastest ahead of a sea of Mustangs after Super2 practice at Queensland Raceway.

As expected, being the first time Super2 is taking on Queensland Raceway with Gen2 machinery, Scott Pye’s 13-year lap record was smashed.

Under gloomy skies, the Super2 youngsters hit the track with Cameron McLeod topping the category’s first session at the “Paperclip” since 2019.

The Ford driver posted a 1:09.7420 to eclipse Zach Bates and Ayrton Hobson by a tenth.

Boosted by his co-drive announcement, Nash Morris used his familiarity with the circuit to secure fourth over Rylan Gray, while Jobe Stewart was the second fastest Commodore in his maiden drive of the venue.

Similar conditions arrived in Practice 2, where Walls put his testing knowledge to good use to end Friday on top.

The Triple Eight driver nailed a 1:09.2467 to be a tenth clear of Reuben Goodall, who led a close contest for second amongst a sea of Mustangs.

Goodall had Morris, Bailey Sweeny and Rylan Gray all close for company.

Turn 6 proved to be a hot spot as Jordyn Sinni, Mason Kelly and Gray all found the gravel at the final right-hander.

However, all cars avoided damage from the first day of getting to know Queensland Raceway.

Unlike previous rounds, there are at least multiple teams appearing to have the pace to give Tickford a challenge.

There was also some notable Super2 news off the track as the category announced the second tier would stage a Top 5 Shootout at Mount Panorama.

Bathurst is the spiritual home of the one-lap dash as it takes over Saturday since Hardies Heroes arrived in 1978.

In 2025 the Super2 drivers will also get a chance to fight for pole by having the mountain all to themselves.

After the category’s first shootout was held at Symmons Plains, it will return to Bathurst.

With Shootouts only really appearing in Supercars, it presents a good chance for the next generation to experience the high-pressure pole decider.

“Bathurst is our biggest stage, and this is a great opportunity for the next generation to make a statement,” said Supercars Chief Motorsport Officer Tim Edwards.

“The first ever Super2 Shootout in Tasmania was an impressive spectacle, and having one at Bathurst adds another exciting element to what will be a massive weekend.

“We’re always in awe of the feats our main game drivers achieve in the Bathurst Shootout, and now it’s time for our rising stars to make their own history.”
