Van Gisbergen gets breakthrough oval win

Shane van Gisbergen has taken his first win on a tarmac oval in America at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Van Gisbergen won a US Legend Cars Summer Shootout Pro Division race at the small Charlotte oval, which is located just in front of the start-finish tower and runs around the infield linking up with pit road.
It was a hard-fought one as well with Van Gisbergen holding off Jake Bollman in the closing laps.
Bollman was breathing down the Kiwi’s neck, but the former Supercars star held on to get a breakthrough.
Team Penske IndyCar driver Scott McLaughlin was further back in ninth.
Both van Gisbergen and McLaughlin have been regularly participating in the US Legend Cars Summer Shootout as a way to keep their oval skills sharp in between meetings.
SVG has already enjoyed plenty of NASCAR success in America since his stunning 2023 debut, but was happy to get a breakthrough.
“First tarmac oval win so pretty cool,” van Gisbergen said.
“I have had an awesome time here and every week we seemed to get better. It was a lot of fun.
“I didn’t want to wreck the car on the tarmac, so did the burnout on the grass.
“I had to celebrate because Jow Ryan Race Cars work pretty hard and run so many cars for us.
“So it is cool to reward the guys and finish on a high.”
Van Gisbergen heads to Iowa this weekend to continue his NASCAR Cup Series rookie campaign.
