Howard salutes Supercars CEO role

Shane howard

By Thomas Miles

The Townsville 500 finale that is about to begin will be the last during Shane Howard’s time as Supercars CEO.

Having been in charge since the start of 2022, Howard will step back from the top, with James Warburton making a comeback.

During that time he has overseen the birth of Gen3 and the parity issues that surfaced, plus the arrival of Finals as the category has tried to rebound from COVID.

He is not going anywhere, however, as he will still remain within Supercars, like he has since 1997.

His new role will focus on driving the strategic evolution of Supercars, including leading engagement with key motorsport bodies and manufacturers, overseeing Toyota’s integration into the championship in 2026, and supporting international expansion initiatives.

Being interviewed by Niel Crompton as part of a farewell on the grid in Townsville, Howard said he was honoured to lead Supercars.

“Look it was a privilege to be given the role as CEO for this company. It has been the major part of my career,” he said.

“I was lucky RACE gave me the opportunity, and I think we have done some amazing things.

“Gen3 era, we know there were a few issues we had to bat through.

“But getting the cars in the wind tunnel, on the AVL Dyno, getting the parity right and now we have such fantastic great racing. I could not be happier.

“I am staying the company. It feels like I am going from a main game driver to a co-driver!

“I am still on the RACE board and will be more targeted to specialist projects.”
