Waters has unfinished business

Waters

By Andrew Clarke

In the latest edition of Auto Action Premium, Tickford star Cameron Waters has opened on his lofty Supercars ambitions.

Tickford Racing is the only home Waters has known in Supercars, and that is the way it will stay for the foreseeable future.

He also enjoys Townsville with three wins, including taking a thrilling Saturday race last year.

Since sweeping the Sydney opener, the Monster Mustang has struggled find the same consistency being in and out of the podium spots.

Speaking in the current issue of Auto Action Premium, Waters isn’t coy about his goals, which he says have been the same since day one.

“I want to win a championship, and I want to win Bathurst,” he said. “We’ve come close, but we haven’t won it yet.

“So we need to keep digging.”

As 2025 barrels toward its climax, Waters remains one of the most compelling figures in the paddock, not because he’s loud, but because he’s driven. There’s a strong sense he’s peaking at the right time.

“We’ve been more consistent this year,” he says. “But the job’s not done. We’ve still got to nail qualifying, get the pit stops right, squeeze more out of the car. Everyone’s on it. There are no easy weekends.”

Adelaide looms large, the final round in a season now a true Grand Final, which he loves: “It rewards the guys who finish strong. That suits us, we’re building toward that.”

His approach, too, has matured. Where once he’d overdrive or let frustration bubble, now he’s strategic. “You learn what matters. Sometimes it’s about not making the big move. Just getting the points, staying in it.”

And if he doesn’t get the championship or Bathurst this year?

“I’ll be annoyed,” he laughs. “But I won’t be done. You know how close you are. One day it clicks.”

At 30, Waters has time. But he also has urgency. “I don’t want to hang around forever without ticking the boxes. I’ve got no interest in just making up the numbers. That’s never been me.”

So, he trains harder. Races year-round. Builds his off-track life to keep his sanity in check. And gives everything he can to a team he’s grown with from teenager to title contender.

Whether 2025 is the year Cam Waters finally cracks the code remains to be seen. But what’s clear is this: he’s no longer the wildcard kid.

And he’s fed up with “almost.”
