Norris takes blame for Piastri clash

Piastri and Norris tangle in Canada

By Thomas Miles

Lando Norris has taken himself out of the Canadian Grand Prix after clashing with Australia’s Oscar Piastri in a defining moment of the 2025 F1 title fight that will haunt McLaren fans.

Norris was hunting down Piastri and went on the attack at the start of Lap 67 for fourth.

The Brit tried to launch a run down the pit straight in the slipstream, but misjudged it and went straight into the back of the Aussie.

Norris was worse off, losing his front wing and crashing out, while Piastri survived and held onto fourth to grow his lead from 12 to 22 points.

It is the first time the teammates have battled wheel to wheel in 2025 and the “Papaya rules” went wrong due to Norris’ misjudgement.

Norris accepted blame instantly.

“I’m sorry, all my bad. Stupid from me,” he said.

It is a spooky sign of history repeating as in 2011 McLaren’s Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton has a near identical clash at the exact same point of the track.

However, unlike that wet race, McLaren do not pull off a miracle as George Russell leads home Max Verstappen and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

The race ended under Safety Car due to the late tangle between the papaya cars.

Full report to follow soon.
