Price to make ARC comeback

By Thomas Miles

After a victorious Australian Rally Championship debut, Toby Price and Holly Killbride will return to the Subaru WRX Challenge at the earliest opportunity.

Price and Killbride will be back on the ARC stage at Rally Queensland from July 4-6.

The pair enjoyed a perfect start by winning last month’s Forest Rally debut in Western Australia.

The Dakar champion, in just his third rally, adapted well to the Subaru and dominated from start to finish.

Having previously only completed two state events in an older Mitsubishi, Price said he learnt more from his one Subaru start than the other experiences combined.

Since that debut, Price has jetted off to America and finished second in the Baja 500 with Paul Weel.

But the positive feeling he enjoyed in WA stayed with him, and he could not wait to jump back into the Maximum Motorsport Subaru again and carry on learning the craft.

“Forest Rally was a blast and the organisers did a hell of a job putting on a really great rally,” Price said.

“The competition was fierce and it was amazing seeing the way the teams and drivers all went about it. To come away with the win in the Subaru WRX Challenge wasn’t something we expected, but it was a real highlight to be standing on that top step after the rally had been run.

“Holly and I had a great time in the Subaru, and while it was certainly a massive challenge and learning curve for us, we were really comfortable with the way the car handled on the tricky WA roads.

“I’m still learning this gravel rally caper but it’s certainly growing on me, and it made sense to look at the next option for us to take part in.

“It didn’t take us very long to decide to go again next month for the Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland, so we’re stoked to confirm that we’ll be lining up again for another crack at the ARC.

“Talking with Glenn (Brinkman) about the Queensland event has also been really exciting for me. It’s certainly a popular event for spectators, and hearing how the whole Gympie region gets around the rally is very exciting for all of us competitors to be part of.”

In the latest issue of Auto Action Premium, Price revealed this style of rallying on four wheels was the furthest thing from his mind not that long ago.

“Years ago, around 2017-18, I had a great chance to jump in with Sebastien Loeb and have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Price told Auto Action.

“But he absolutely scared the crap out of me in his rally car, and I thought ‘far out, that is one sport I will not be good at’ because what he did with the car was unbelievable.

“It turned me away a little bit at the time, but it was also exciting to be in the car and feel it and see it all.”
