Mostert breakthrough leads WAU front row lockout

Chaz Mostert has taken his first Supercars pole in a year and led another Walkinshaw Andretti United 1-2 in a thrilling Race 14 qualifying.
Mostert has been uncharacteristically struggling for one-lap pace in 2025 with only one front row start across the first four rounds.
However, the “Mozzie” rediscovered his best and emerged on top amid a thrilling fight for pole.
The top five of Matt Payne, Broc Feeney, Brodie Kostecki, Ryan Wood and Mostert all put themselves into the lead at the death.
But after some recent qualifying struggles, Mostert nailed a 53.6858 to snare a first breakthrough pole since Wanneroo last year, as just 0.0961s covered the top three.
“It is always nervous after 12 months from a good result,” Mostert said.
“The car is a fair bit different to what we usually run, so it proves it works, and it is a great reward to the team.
“I needed to tune myself up from Q1 to Q2 which shows what Woody is doing this year. I just sent it and came out the other side.
“Thanks to the trolls out there, appreciate you.”
Q1
Under sunny skies the field chased to get into the top 10 on Soft tyres.
The Fords opened the gates with Randle posting the best opening lap of a 55.2196, being a tenth clear of Allen.
Even though Feeney was the first to record a 54s time, Randle immediately snuck ahead to reclaim P1.
However, the Grove Racing teammates were both setting purple sectors and were flying.
The more experienced Kiwi ended up on top with a 54.5046, just 0.0224s clear of his rookie teammate Allen.
Meanwhile, Brown was also on the pace and less than a tenth away.
Courtney set a purple first sector but aborted the lap as he sat eighth.
But with most of the field utilising used rubber, times were expected to tumble in the second half of the session.
Fullwood was the first to make a statement and went up to third, and was within 0.04s of the top.
Randle snatched back the lead, but again he was denied by Grove Racing with its latest 1-2, headed by Allen with an impressive 54.1679 by 0.0143s.
But Wood and Feeney were flying as the WAU driver soared into the 53’s.
Payne was the only other to join him in the 53s club as Wood led the session by a slender 0.0271s.
Allen held onto third ahead of Feeney and Mostert.
The likes of Kostecki, Brown and Fullwood all made vital late leaps to secure tickets to Q2.
The others to make it were Waters and Golding, leaving Percat, Reynolds and Hill the hard luck stories.
Despite being fast throughout, Randle ended up tumbling to 14th after a “messy session” where he had a close call with a Triple Eight Camaro.
There was a close call between the PremiAir teammates with Stanaway flying down the hill, only to meet a wall of traffic and the Kiwi had to slam the brakes to avoid Golding.
Q2
Feeney opened the batting with a 54.5763, but that was not enough to stop a pack of Mustangs from charging past.
Waters, Mostert and Wood all went faster with the WAU youngster again leading the way by a slender 0.0326s.
Mostert then responded to sneak ahead, but Grove Racing was on another level.
The Penrite cars waited an extra couple of minutes to start their runs on a fresh set and it paid off.
Payne flew into the 53’s with a 53.8720 and enjoyed two tenths on his teammate Allen and four tenths on the rest of the field.
As a result, the Grove teammates, plus Fullwood spent the rest of the session in the garage.
Waters was the first to improve at the death, coming within 0.0894s of Payne.
Feeney and Kosecki exchanged purple sectors and also turns in the lead.
Feeney displaced Payne before Kostecki went faster.
However, the WAU Mustangs were going even faster with Mostert, Wood and Kostecki split by just 0.0839s after they followed each other to the chequered flag.
