Winterbottom to make TV debut

Winterbottom Crompton

By Thomas Miles

Supercars champion Mark Winterbottom will make his TV debut by joining the Supercars commentary team for this weekend’s Perth Super440.

Winterbottom will perform a variety of positions behind the microphone in a special comment position.

In the Supercars announcement, it was hinted that the 2015 champion will appear in both the commentary box alongside the likes of Niel Crompton and Mark Skaife, and in the lane with Jess Yaetes and Mark Larkham.

It comes as Winterbottom enjoys his first season without a full-time drive since 2003, but remains a key part of the paddock as a Tickford co-driver and Super2 mentor.

Few know Wanneroo better than Winterbottom, with only Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife taking more wins at the circuit.

“Frosty” has seven wins at the famous WA circuit, starting with a famous clean sweep in 2008 and a nail-biting win in 2012 when FPR and Triple Eight went at it.

He also took three wins across five races in 2015 and 2016 when he was at his best at the famous Ford team.

“Fans love Frosty, and we’re excited to have him on the broadcast for Perth,” Supercars Head of Broadcast Nathan Prendergast said.

“Having someone of his experience and respect contributing will be great for fans as the season approaches the halfway mark.

“Frosty is honest, articulate and knows exactly what’s going on, and he’ll be a wonderful asset.”

The Perth Super440 will be another subscription-only round with Channel Seven only broadcasting highlights at 1.01 AEST Sunday morning and 23.20 AEST Sunday night, while 7mate as a more friendly time of 12.00 AEST Monday.

All sessions will be live on Fox Spots starting at 13.45 AEST Friday, 10.30 AEST Saturday and 10.45 AEST Sunday.
