F2 Monaco Preview: Tight Margins, Title Tensions and a Circuit That Forgives Nothing

Formula 2 at Monaco in 2024

By Auto Action

Round 5 of the 2025 FIA Formula 2 Championship hits the most unforgiving and iconic venue on the calendar — the streets of Monte Carlo — as the second leg of a brutal triple-header demands precision, patience, and a touch of brilliance.

After a dramatic swing at Imola, Alexander Dunne now leads the Drivers’ Championship, while Hitech TGR have surged to the top of the Teams’ standings. But Monaco is the ultimate equaliser — a circuit where strategy, timing, and luck all intertwine. With overtaking nearly impossible, track position reigns supreme and qualifying becomes a make-or-break moment for every team.

What to Expect

The grid enters Monaco with little margin for error. Gabriele Minì called it “a very technical and very tight” challenge, where mistakes are punished and opportunities are rare. The swimming pool section remains the high-speed highlight, while Rascasse and the run from the tunnel remain the few overtaking chances.

The weekend starts early, with Free Practice on Thursday, followed by a split qualifying session on Friday — a format unique to Monaco — as the field is divided into two groups. With history showing Group A generally holds the edge in track conditions, getting the luck of the draw could be critical.

Strategy is a big talking point too. Pirelli’s softest compounds — the Soft and Supersoft — return for a race where Safety Cars and Virtual Safety Cars can swing the result dramatically, as Zak O’Sullivan’s late charge from 15th to victory in 2024 proved. While winning from pole is still common, it’s not guaranteed, and timing a pit stop could be the biggest advantage of all.

Championship Picture

Dunne (Rodin Motorsport) leads the way with 64 points, just ahead of Luke Browning (Hitech TGR) on 58 and Richard Verschoor (MP Motorsport) on 55. Leonardo Fornaroli and rookie Arvid Lindblad round out the top five. But the title fight remains wide open, with Campos Racing and MP Motorsport pushing hard in the Teams’ race.

F2 Monaco Schedule – All times AEST

This is where champions prove their worth — not just with raw speed, but by mastering the mental chess game that is Formula 2 in Monaco. Track position, tyre strategy and sheer nerve will all be tested. And with a field this close, expect tension from the first practice lap to the chequered flag on Sunday.
