Brown denies Wood pole

Brown on pole

By Thomas Miles

Will Brown has continued his resurgence by denying Ryan Wood a maiden Supercars pole at Tasmania in a tight Top 10 Shootout.

Wood appeared set for his first ever pole, only for Brown, the last car on track, to sneak ahead by 0.0840s.

Brown did it with a 51.4905, taking his ninth career pole, but notably the first of 2025.

Wood impressed on four green tyres to rise from fifth to second on the grid.

But he was not the driver who made the biggest ground with Waters surging from 10th to third with James Golding and Broc Feeney getting themselves into the top five.

With the sun sneaking through the clouds for the first time in the day, it was a clean session.

After just scrapping through in qualifying, Waters was the first car out and made big ground.

He produced a clean and “not too bad” 51.643, which stood for three cars until Wood came along.

Golding matched the first sector and fell just 0.050s short with his teammate Stanaway not too far behind as Evans lost time throughout having a slight lock up coming into the hairpin.

Charging Kiwi Wood flew out of the blocks on four green tyres and went purple in the first sector.

Despite finding the dirt coming out of the final corner, Wood carried enough speed to be 0.069s up.

Erebus rookie Murray was next to have a crack and took a tighter line through the hairpin, but struggled to challenge the top end of town.

However, he still did enough to beat De Pasquale, who had a close call coming out of Turn 3.

Randle also struggled to hook it up and merged sixth at the time of his lap, just ahead of Murray.

Feeney was determined to carry on his dominance on four fresh tyres, but was on the back foot, being two tenths down at the first split.

The #88 went purple in the second split which was enough for fourth.

Now the only man who could deny Wood was Brown, who sent it into Turn 2.

He was down at the first split, but the reigning champion, who took a wider line in the hairpin, flew across the second and third sectors to snatch it.

The grid is now set for the 78-lap main event at 14.45 AEST.
