Garwood to lead Touring Car Masters Tassie tussle

Touring Car Masters at Tasmania

By Thomas Miles

Touring Car Masters will be roaring back to Tasmania and spearheading the assault is returning reigning champion and home hero Adam Garwood.

Garwood will stand out with the #1 on the door in the 13-car field as the only Tasmanian, but he will not be driving the car that took him to the title.

Instead the VB Commodore will be run by Jude Bargwanna in the Duggan Family Hotels team as Garwood goes back to his roots.

Garwood will drive a Ford Capri that was once run by his father Greg back in 2018, but the V8 has since been modified by Maverick Performance to fight amongst the Pro Masters contenders.

In addition to his home round, the Tasmanian is hopeful of also competing at least the Darwin and Bend rounds.

“It is pretty exciting. “We have had the Capri in the family for a few years now and it has always ran as an invitational car, but Gerard McLeod of Maverick Performance has put a fair bit of work to get it align with the rules and hopefully we can fight for some race wins at Symmons Plains,” he told Auto Action.

“We had to do some bodywork changes and also to the shock absorbers and gearbox. Not huge things, but it just transforms it from a tarmac rally car to a proper circuit car.

“My father ran it mostly in TCM in the Invitational class and I have just done some local stuff at Symmons and Baskerville, but not for a couple of years.

“We are sort of going in blind and it will be a bit of a challenge, but it should not take too long to get our heads around it and I’m looking forward to racing hard.”

With Garwood not returning at the competitive Sydney season opener, it is an open championship race currently led by Whiteline Racing’s Joel Heinrich.

Cameron Tilley impressed in his Pro Am Valient, but he is likely to miss the second round, while Pro Sport leader Peter Burnitt will also not be in action.

There will be some newcomers however, with WA driver Aldo Di Paoli making the big trip in his Pro Am Chevrolet Camaro SS.

Martin Riseley will also make his debut in Pro Sport, driving an ex Jamie Tilley Mustang coupe.
