Feeney’s victory feathers

Feeney hits duck

By Thomas Miles

Collecting a duck is not usually something a sportsperson in Melbourne wants, but it proved the opposite for victorious Broc Feeney.

Feeney found the perfect response to falling just short in the Sydney 500, taking both poles on offer on the opening day of the Melbourne SuperSprint before dominating the Thursday night sprint.

Whilst the Triple Eight star was untroubled from his rivals, there was a major scare created from the local wildlife.

After opening up a second on the field on the first lap, he lost a third of that gap on Lap 2 when he  unexpectedly came across a flock of ducks on the exit of Turn 10.

Despite a number of close calls, sadly Feeney did strike a duck and there were still the feathers on the bonnet to prove it after he cruised to his first victory of 2025.

Feeney admitted that as sweet as winning was, he feels bad about taking out a member of the Albert Park wildlife.

“Unfortunately, there was some animals on the track, but apart from that it was a good and smooth sailing race,” he said.

“For about three laps there was a yellow flag at Turns 9 and 10.

“There were two groups either side of the track and unfortunately one lap I cam through and there were two in the middle.

“By the time you see it with the tyre bundle I was like ‘oh no’ and there was nothing I can do.

“I feel bad taking about it. I killed it and was like dammit. Its not a good thing.”

Whilst the incident will be fondly rembered, it was just a small part of what could be a very important day in the 2025 season.

After Tickford and Cam Waters smashed the field in Sydney, Triple Eight was determined to hit back.

None were more eager than Feeney, who was second best in the all-time finish in race two.

“Having returned to a happy hunting ground in Albert Park, he is delighted to hit back emphatically and has the chance to go back to back tomorrow as he also enjoys the privilege of pole,” he said.

“If you look back at it, we got three front row starts in Sydney. The races didn’t go our way. We had one thing go wrong in every race.

“We’ve had three second place starts and two poles so far to start this year.

“So, from qualifying front it’s been awesome. It’s just been about converting, and I know how important it is here to get pole position.”
