Lights out for Senna Netflix show

By Thomas Miles

Formula 1 fans have a new treat from Netflix with a new six-episode mini series on Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna coming out today.

The new Netflix exclusive mini series that documents the life of three-time world champion Senna has been released today on Friday, November 29.

Whilst the 2024 season has marked the 30th anniversary of the tragic death at Imola, the 1988, 1990 and 1991 world champion remains one of the biggest legends in the sport.

All the iconic moments such as walking on water at Monaco 1984 in a Toleman, the iconic Suzuka clashes with arch rival Alain Prost, epic 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix win are featured, whilst his life before F1 and away from the track is also documented.

Gabriel Leone stars as the 41-time Grand Prix winner, while other drivers that are set to feature prominently are Niki Lauda, Prost, Nelson Piquet, James Hunt and Damon Hill.

To film the racing scenes, Netflix commissioned the use of a number of replica racing cars from the Crespis family in Argentina, which have constructed replica F1 cars for decades.

The actors themselves also took part in multiple karting sessions each week.

Replicas of Senna’s 1984 Toleman, plus the McLaren MP4/4 (1988) MP4/5 (1989) MP4/5B (1990) and MP4/6 (1991) and Williams FW16 (1994) were seen.

Other competitor’s cars such as Prost’s 1990 Ferrari 641 and Nigel Mansell’s 1991 Williams FW14 were also seen.

“It was a huge thrill because you are seeing the car that Senna raced in,” said Senna Lead Director Vicente Amorim.

“We built 22 replicas of cars Senna raced in and his main rivals from Formula Ford to Formula 1.

“The biggest challenge is being in the car, being on the track and having dramatic control in the situation.”
