Gomersall doubles Mustang GT4 fleet

Gomersall

By Thomas Miles

Jason Gomersall will double the total of Ford Mustangs racing in the GT4 Australia field at Sydney this weekend.

Gomersall will be the first to race a Mustang alongside George Miedecke and Rylan Gray, who were the first to race the GT4 pony at Phillip Island.

Since then they have scored four wins with the new car, including on debut.

Former Touring Car Masters and Super3 driver Gomersall will stand out, racing with blue iSeek colours in the Am Cup.

His #71 Mustang will be part of an expanded three-car Gomersall Motorsport attack that also includes Glenn Walker debuting in an Am Cup BMW M4 GT4 F82 and Silver Cup’s Jake Camilleri.

Gomersall has got accustomed to the GT4 Mustang with a test in Queensland Raceway and is excited to use the final two rounds as preparation for a full tilt next year.

“I will do the Sydney race and Bathurst International, so it will be nice to get on track this year and do the whole season next year,” Gomersall told AUTO ACTION.

“I had one test day at QR, which was very good. It is not quite as quick as a Super3 car, but not far off.

“It is a good next step. As soon as I stepped out of Super3 I have missed racing and been trying to figure out what is the category for me.

“TCM would be good to go back to but don’t have a car and the GT4 Ford looked pretty good.

“The running cost hits the mark. None of this is cheap, but this is good value for money and the car is the right capability for me.”

Gomersall admitted he looked at all GT4 options, but the Australian connected Mustang leaped out at him.

“I researched all the options from a BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and they are all great cars, but the Mustang attracted the most to me,” he said.

“Multimatic have done a great job making it look like a race car.

“It has a 5L Coyote V8, rear wheel drive it is what I know and an Australian made Hollinger gearbox and Motec data.

“I have known the Miedeckes for a long time and will work together on spares etc and cover each other.”

All up there will be 22 cars taking part in GT4 Australia honours at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The field is boosted by the arrival of Super2 drivers Lochie Dalton and Jarrod Hughes, while Jason Yu and Josh Buchan return in the Zagame Autosport McLaren Artura GT4.

Private testing begins on Thursday ahead of two official practice sessions on Friday, qualifying and Race 1 on Saturday, with Sunday’s second hour-long event completing the round.
