Supports wrap: Borg bests V8SuperUte Series opener

By Ava Stone

The winner of Race 1 at the Bathurst 1000 in the 2024 Tyrepower V8 Super Ute series has been crowned, Aaron Borg of Team Motion Racing.

Borg could not be caught, picking up the eighth victory of his career at the mountain.

After an action-packed qualifying on Friday, the order was set with some of the heavy hitters buried deep in the pack.

After a rough qualifying for Ryal Harris, it was a back of the grid start that would see him have a fight on his hands to work his way up the order.

An earlier race in the schedule led to an oil spill on track, causing the start to be delayed until the track was restored.

The start was chaos, Craig Woods of Western Sydney Motorsport spinning on track, a slight overcorrection error as speed builds going into the first corner.

Harris’ day then went from bad to worse, spinning his Mazda BT-50 and ending up in the wall.

Harris locked up to avoid the cars fighting in front, causing the no.58 to ride the curb and bounce into the wall.

This crash caused a safety car, but Harris was able to return the car to the pits, unable to continue Race 1.

The no.7 car of Cameron Crick was worried to have picked up some damage in a bump during the start but continued without issue.

Due to the unavoidable delays prior to the race, there was a rush to get the track back to green to get some racing in for the Utes.

The condition looked to be perfect, a slightly chilly yet sunny start to Friday morning.

Just under five minutes to go and it was back to green, Borg took off well and held his lead.

The restart allowed for some tussles in the middle of the pack, cars back within striking distance of each other, fighting for position.

Picking the slipstream and making a move down conrod straight was attempted by many drivers, timing their run into the chase.

An impressive pace saw the 34-year-old secure the first win for the series at the iconic Bathurst weekend.

The reigning champion will be looking to continue his success as the series continues over the weekend.

Saturday will see the SuperUtes out on track for Race 2 at 8:35am and Race 3 at 2:25pm.
