Mansell to make F2 debut from pole

Mansell

By Thomas Miles

Australia’s Christian Mansell will line up on pole position in his first ever FIA Formula 2 race at Azerbaijan this Saturday.

Mansell will inherit the reverse grid pole with the top 10 positions flipped for the Sprint Race.

The Newcastle youngster posted an impressive 1:55.645, which was seven tenths away from pole sitter Richard Verschoor.

Verschoor edged out Mercedes bound Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli by just 0.017s.

After finishing his second FIA Formula 3 season in a strong fifth place, Mansell has secured a surprise immediate graduation to F2.

He has replaced Roman Stanek at Trident and will stay in the seat for the rest of the year also racing at Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

The session was a nightmare for Campos with Isack Hadjar and María Martí locking up and finding the Turn 1 barrier.

This turned the session into a one-lap sprint and Verschoor nailed it.

The F2 Sprint will take place from 20.15 AEST on Fox Sports/Kayo Saturday night.
