Erebus Academy welcomes Max Geoghegan

By Timothy Neal

Max Geoghegan, the grandson of five-time ATCC champion Ian Geoghegan, will become the newest member of the Erebus Academy as he continues his TGRA Scholarship Series season this weekend at Sandown.

Geoghegan will jump in a Toyota 86 at Sandown in the TGRA qualifying Scholarship Series this weekend, but this time it will be as an official member of the Erebus Academy pathway, that has developed some of the country’s best young and current talent, such as Super2 drivers Jarrod Hughes and Jobe Stewart.

Max’s grandfather, Ian “Pete”  Geoghegan was a five-time Australian Touring Car Championship title winner through there 1960’s and 80’s, which also included winning the 1973 Bathurst 1000 alongside Allan Moffat.

In 2022, Geoghegan made his state circuit racing debut at 19-years of age, which culminated in a victory in the Excel Cup at Queensland Raceway.

Excited to progress, he says that he is aware of the talent that has been fostered in the Erebus Academy, and that he’s keen to give his all and to contribute to that list.

“I’m excited to join Erebus Academy…seeing the incredible talent that has been nurtured here, I know it’s the perfect place for me to start my journey and grow alongside the Academy,” Geoghegan said.

“The Erebus Academy has a strong track record of success, and I’m eager to contribute to that, not only in this year’s 86 series but also in what lies ahead.”

Erebus CEO Barry Ryan says that Max has been in his periphery for some time, and that his form in the 86 machinery is on an upward trajectory.

“Max Geoghegan is a young driver I’ve been keeping an eye on for the past year or two, and his progress in the Toyota 86 series has been impressive,” Ryan said.

“His dedication to improving his skills has been recognised not only by me, but also by Paul Morris at Norwell Motorplex and other instructors there.

“They speak highly of Max’s talent and potential both on and off the track.”
