Audi joins GT4 Australia

By Thomas Miles

The GT4 Australia Series welcomes a new manufacturer in Audi ahead of a return to Phillip Island this weekend, while contender Tom McLennan makes a big switch.

Audi will make its first start in the championship in the fourth round where Steve Jukes will steer a Verve Motorsport R8 GT4 LMS.

Also joining the 16-car field are Paul and Nash Morris in a McLaren, while Super3 Series leader Cody Burcher is also coming to the category.

The driver who has won all-but one of the Super3 races will drive alongside Tim Leahey in the BMW M4 GT4 G82.

Ginetta will be coming to the grid with a brand new G56 GT4 that will be fronted by Oscar Targett, who is on a high from dominating the Porsche Sprint Challenge.

Also joining GT4 for the first time is Love Racing with Sam Brabham chasing outright honours with Antonio Astuti in a Mercedes.

All eyes will be on the resumption of the Ford v McLaren rivalry that reached boiling point at Queensland Raceway.

George Miedecke in the Mustang and Tom McLennan in the McLaren clashed on the penultimate lap when fighting for victory on Saturday.

McLennan spun Miedecke, but the latter had the last laugh by dominating Sunday’s race.

Phillip Island was the track where the GT4 Mustang made its historic Australian debut in April.

However, McLennan will not be behind the wheel of a McLaren this weekend and will be racing a Porsche instead.

He is joining TekworkX Motorsport to race a Cayman 716 GT4 with Zoe Woods.

“I’m really excited to be joining TekworkX this weekend at Phillip Island,” said McLennan.

“I can’t thank the team and Zoe enough for having me onboard to drive their Porsche this weekend at such a late notice.

“Really looking forward to working with the team, as I have always raced against them in other Porsche series so it’s cool to now join them for a weekend.

“I’ve done plenty of driving in Porsches so hopefully we can transfer that into the GT4 and grab a good result this weekend with Zoe and the team.”

There will be two races at Phillip Island this weekend where free entry is offered to spectators.
