Big Winton Weekend with 300 and VMRC

By Timothy Neal

Winton Motor Raceway is set for another huge weekend of action and premium fan value with the Winton 300 and Round 3 of the Victorian Motor Racing Championship.

Just a week after it hosted the packed out VHRR Festival of Speed, the value for a fans dollar is again through the roof with the 300km enduro and a quality list of support categories.

There are national guns and hopefuls aplenty in the big enduro, but the VMRC is also bringing the Australian Super Truck Series, Australian Drivers’ Championship, Stock Cars Australia, 2-Litre Sports Sedans, Excel Trophy, Excel Masters and Super TT.

There’s a packed grid of 40 cars set to contest the 2024 Winton 300

The grid is at capacity for the enduro, with 40 cars set to battle it out for the honours, with a good spread of classes throughout.

The entry list features former race winners, young superstars, old veterans and a few second-generation names, as reigning champions Andrew Boydell and Jason Walsh return in their Mazda MX-5 to go for back-to-back.

Among some of the entries are Super2 race winner Zach Bates alongside Graeme Shaw in a Toyota 86, whilst TA2 series leader Josh Haynes will be paying up with Michael Ricketts in a Nissan Pulsar.

Regular front runner and 2022 winner Benny Tran will be alongside Damon Ashton in a Honda Integra, whilst the 2024 will also be tackled with a BMW M4 with drivers such as Anthony Soole, Adrian Wilson, and Marcus LaDelle at the wheel.

With Lotus Exige’s and Mazda RX7’s doing the rounds, the quality of both machinery and drivers will prove the 300 to be a thrilling outing.

Each car is put in a class based on speed, the higher the division the longer the crew must spend in pit lane during the race. It is set to be a classic edition of the Winton 300, a race which dates back to 1985.

“It’s amazing to have Pitcher Partners jumping onboard as the title sponsor of the event this year,” said Winton Motor Raceway CEO Stephen Whyte.

“We’ve had a couple of people that have been instrumental in making it happen, of course Charlie Viola from Pitcher Partners, but I’ve got to thank John Boston, he’s been very integral in the event this year.

“We’ve got some past winners back in there, a lot of cars and from right around the sport and a couple of local chances as well.

“All of the classes are going to be really well supported right from Class A to Class E. I’m really, really proud that we’re able to continue the history of having long distance events here at Winton.”

With ticket prices at $30 for an entire weekend, the added bonus of the VMRC is great value for money.

Since 1987 the Australian Super Trucks have been tearing down the Winton straights creating an unmatched sight with their sheer size and speed.

The big rigs will have four regular races (two reverse grid), and two races for the mechanics, so expect some wheel-to-wheel racing as they haul it down the straights and get hairy on the corners.

The Hyper Racers bring their battle for the Australian Drivers Championship back to Winton

There’s also a huge field of Hyper Racer X1’s for Round 3 of the Australian Drivers’ Championship.

Grid sizes have been growing nicely over the years, and in 2024, these ground effect, Suzuki Hayabusa powered open wheelers have lived up to the new Australian Drivers Championship hype.

Damon Stirling currently leads the title chase from Dean Cooke and Hayden Crossland, with an open field capable of producing winners all the way down the grid.

When it comes to muscle car racing, the Stock Cars Australia is a crowd favourite as it contains NASCAR, AUSCARs and TA2 Muscle Cars. Big sound for big entertainment.

Along with the multiple Excel categories, two-litre Sports Sedans, and Super TT fields, there’s action aplenty for great prices.

Fans can enter the venue and watch practice day Friday for free, Saturday tickets cost $15, $20 for Sunday or $30 for a weekend pass. Tickets available here: https://events.humanitix.com/vmrc-round-3-winton300-winton-motor-raceway/tickets

Children under the age of 16 can enter for free, food and drinks are available to be purchased at the track.
