Stanaway ‘yet to process’ future after Grove call

Stanaway

By Thomas Miles

Richie Stanaway is “not sure” what the future holds having broken his silence following Grove Racing’s decision not to renew his contract.

After just seven rounds together, Grove Racing announced it will be parting ways with Stanaway at the end of 2024.

It has left Stanaway at the crossroads yet again as he faces the prospect of moving teams for the seventh time in the eight seasons he has been involved with Supercars if he finds a new home in 2025.

In his first full-time Supercars season in five years, the Kiwi sits 13th in the championship with just one top 10 finish in the last eight races despite a stronger and more consistent start to the year with a fourth first up at Bathurst.

In that time his teammate Matt Payne has seven top 10 finishes including one victory and sits fifth in the standings.

The announcement was a blow after a tough Sydney SuperNight where the #26 finished outside the top 20 on both occasions.

Grove Racing is yet to announce a replacement, but Super2 star Kai Allen is the favourite, while DJR’s Anton De Pasquale is also in the frame.

In the announcement there was nothing from Stanaway, who four days later has broken his silence and admitted he is at the crossroads once again.

“I’m not sure yet, for me next season,” Stanaway said.

“At the moment I am still just focusing on trying to finish 2024 as strong as possible.

“I haven’t really had a chance to process where I’m at, so I’m sure I’ll start working on that in due course.”

The next step on Stanaway’s path to show enough promise to secure a 2025 drive is the Tasmania SuperSprint on August 16-18.

The last time the Kiwi raced at Symmons Plains was 2019 for GRM where he finished 16th and 19th, but qualified seventh in the latter.

“I have not raced there since 2019 so not ideal circumstances for me having had a few years off.” Stanaway said on Tassie.

“I feel like I am only just getting back into the groove of things but looking forward to hopefully having some stronger results.

“I had quite a strong qualifying here in 2019 relative to the rest of my season so hopefully I can have a strong round.”
