By Thomas Miles

The iconic Bathurst winning duo of Dick Johnson and John Bowe will be reunited at the Historic Leyburn Sprints event next month.

“Dick and JB” will be key parts of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix run at Leyburn in 1949 as Guests of Honour at the event held on August 17-18.

The pair that won two Bathurst 1000s together and three ATCC crowns during their decade together at Dick Johnson Racing from 1988-1998.

The sight of the red #17 and #18 Shell Ford Sierras finishing 1-2 during the late 1980s was a regular one at the front of the ATCC field, with their Great Race glories in 1989 and 1994 the highlights.

At Leyburn they will take part in a range of activities, including autograph sessions and the official opening and commemoration ceremony with Bowe also competing in a Ford Escort.

Leyburn Sprints President Tricia Chant was thrilled to announce the news.

“Dick and JB are two of the most popular personalities in Australian motorsport with a true enthusiast’s feel for the type of grassroots event we stage at Leyburn. It will be an honour to have them here alongside our other guests,” she said.

“They will be part of the biggest Sprints since the event was founded in 1996. There will be a wonderful range of attractions on- and off-track.”

Bowe is delighted he will finally be able to attend the event.

“I’m very excited to be at Leyburn,” he says.

“I’ve been invited many times, but could never find the time. I’ll see all the car and race fans very soon!”

Johnson and Bowe joins Warwick Brown, Bruce Allison, Ron Harrop, Brian Gelding and John Harris as fellow guests of honour at Leyburn.
