New winner for Des Wall Trophy

By Thomas Miles

There will be a new winner of the Des Wall Trophy with no Tony Ricciardello in a strong 22-car field for the Precision National Precision Sports Sedan Series at Sydney this weekend.

For the first time in 2024 the Sports Sedans are on the Supercars spotlight by being one of the main support acts at the Sydney SuperNight event.

Last year Riccardello overcame Jordan Caruso in a tense two-car sprint, but neither of them will be racing around SMP in 2024.

Instead a new face will be lifting the Des Wall Trophy and it will likely be a very competitive fight to do so.

Peter Ingram heads to SMP as the hunted, being the championship leader in his black carbon fibre turbocharged rotary Mazda RX7, commonly referred to as the “Batmobile.”

He took the championship by storm by sweeping the Tasmanian opener and remained consistent as Thomas Randle swept the last round at The Bend.

Leading the charge behind him are Geoff Taunton and Steven Lacey in their MARC GT SS cars.

Lacey will be especially determined to perform with SMP being his home track, while he will be a busy boy as he doubles up in both the national and NSW series.

The 22-car field is extremely diverse with the fire-breathing cars ranging from a 1974 Fiat 124 Coupe of Brad Shiels to Lacey’s new 2024 MARC car.

With the NSW Sports Sedan Series also on show, 14 of the 22 drivers are locals.

The chase for the prestigious Des Wall Trophy will be held over three races on the weekend, while on track action begins with two practices and qualifying on Friday.
