Waters goes back to back

Waters

By Thomas Miles

Cameron Waters snatched Practice 2 honours from Jack Le Brocq to sweep both Friday Supercars sessions at Townsville.

For much of the session Le Brocq led the way for Erebus as the only car in the 1m13s window, only for Waters to sneak past by just 0.0590s with his 16th and final lap of the session.

Mark Winterbottom also nailed his lap at the death to be third ahead of Thomas Randle and Chaz Mostert, while the top Triple Eight car was Broc Feeney in 10th.

Despite the threat of the rain, the 40-minute session remained dry under overcast skies.

Anton De Pasquale, Randle and Aaron Love flew out of the gates on fresh tyres, being the only cars in the 1m14s window on the first push lap.

The DJR car led the way with a 1:14.4654, 0.1566s clear of Randle.

Brown and Hill then joined them on their second push lap, but Love was on fire in the #3.

The rookie went purple in sector one to improve to an impressive second.

These laps were critical as small drops of rain started to appear.

Fullwood was the last to put the foot down, waiting until the eight minute mark and the patience paid off as the #14 went into P1.

But Fullwood was not on top for long with Mostert sneaking ahead before Le Brocq smashed the field, being the first into the 1m13s window.

His new benchmark of a 1:13.8966 was four tenths clear and a sign happy hour was arriving in the first half of the session due to the threat of rain.

The likes of Waters, Mostert and Kostecki were the next to fire but could not knock off the #9, while Andre Heimgartner was last but shot all the way up to fourth.

Ryan Wood had a wild ride over the Turn 6 kerb and found the grass which forced him into opposite lock.

The leaderboard settled down as teams focused on race runs until the final five minutes.

On his final lap Waters found enough pace to set some purple sectors and knock off Le Brocq by just 0.05s.

Winterbottom made a big leap going up 15 spots to third.

PremiAir struggled with both cars outside the top 19.

Teams will now sift through the data to prepare for qualifying at 10.15 Saturday morning.
