Brown fronts Triple Eight 1-2

Will Brown darwin 2024

By Thomas Miles

Despite the odd moment at Turn 1, Will Brown was head and shoulders above the rest in the second Supercars practice at Darwin.

Brown went off twice at Turn 1, but that did not faze him as the championship leader posted a session-topping 1:06.2120.

This saw the #87 enjoy a huge three-tenth advantage over Triple Eight teammate Broc Feeney.

Cameron Waters was third after sneaking ahead of Anton De Pasquale, Bryce Fullwood and Andre Heimgartner.

With cool track conditions and a mix of cars focusing on race pace and Top 10 Shootout simulations, it is hard to gauge a form guide after the 30-minute session.

Brown started strong by posting a 1:06.8719 to edge ahead of Heimgartner and Randle by less than a tenth.

The Monster Mustang of Waters then knocked off the #87 with a 1:06.6301.

But Brown went on fresh tyres and went well clear of the rest of the field, lowering the benchmark to a 1:06.2120 to open a massive four tenth advantage.

Feeney saved his green tyre run for the final 10 minutes and immediately made it a Triple Eight 1-2, but was still three tenths down.

Drivers were finding the limits at Turn 1 with both Brown and Waters coming off the brakes to spear off into the infield. The #87 went off again and spun on the second occasion.

Waters also had further battles with a scary moment in the pits, attempting to leave the lane early as his crew were still changing his front right before stopping in the wrong part of the lane as he joined most of the field to have a crack before the chequered flag.

Fullwood and Reynolds made jumps into the top 10, but no one could snap the Triple Eight 1-2.

Attention turns to the Top 10 Shootout at 11.35 ACST.
