Supercars to stage engine testing in USA

PremiAir Racing engine issue

By Thomas Miles

Supercars has confirmed its Gen3 engine testing will enter a new American phase next month following the Sydney SuperNight.

Much like the wind tunnel testing at the end of 2023, Supercars will fly across the Pacific to stage independent engine testing at an AVL facility in Plymouth, Michigan.

In addition to Supercars, team members from the homologation squads Triple Eight Race Engineering and Dick Johnson Racing, plus both Chevrolet and Ford will be in attendance.

It will be held across two phases with the first to “to deepen the understanding of each engine, explore various test procedures using advanced equipment, and trial proposed updated Homologation processes.”

To achieve this discovery tests on the current current WOT output, inertia, negative torque, fuel economy and gear shifting levels will be held.

These will allow the AVL personnel to get a grip on the Chevrolet KRE and Ford Coyote engines and the homologation progress.

The second phase will be the official test with Supercars, homologation team and manufacturer representatives.

This will “implement the agreed parity processes, ensuring both engines meet the established parity target tolerances.”

Supercars CEO Shane Howard said it will provide “unprecedented insights” into the engine process.

“By utilising AVL’s state-of-the-art facilities and expertise, we aim to gain unprecedented insights into engine performance,” he said.

“Once testing is completed, information from the AVL testing will be passed on to all teams accordingly.”

The AVL testing will be held after the Sydney SuperNight, which is to be staged at Sydney Motorsport Park on July 19-21.
