Brown third fastest in NASCAR Cup Series practice

Cam Waters and Will Brown NACSAR Debut: Image by NASCAR

By Andrew Clarke

Will Brown stunned the NASCAR paddock with the third fastest time in a rare Friday practice session at a resurfaced Sonoma Raceway, while Cam Waters struggled on debut with a spectacular spin and 35th fastest time in the session.

In Xfinity, Shane van Gisbergen topped the field with a 0.309s gap to Parker Kligerman, with Cup Series star Ty Gibbs in third.

But it was Brown’s performance that had people paying attention.

He was the fastest Chev on the trach, trailing the Team Penske Mustang of Ryan Blayney and Ty Gibbs in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. His teammates at Richard Childress Racing were down in 11th (Austin Dillon) and 15th (Kyle Busch), and this correlates with the form shown on the GM simulator in past weeks.

Waters missed the first 10 minutes of the session and then battled his Mustang. He is less than a 10th behind Brad Keselowski, who was 32nd fastest but trailed his other Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing teammate Chris Beuscher by nearly a second. With the race package set-up effectively locked when the cars leave the factory, Waters could be in for a tough debit.
