Van Gisbergen and Brown flying in Sonoma, Waters spins

By Thomas Miles

The Supercars stars have had their first taste of Sonoma and Shane van Gisbergen is off to a flying start in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

On a high from his victory at Portland, van Gisbergen finished fastest in the Xfinity Series practice with a 1:15.29s lap, which was miles ahead of the field.

The Kiwi was three tenths clear of next best Parker Kilgerman, while NASCAR Cup Series star Ty Gibbs was third. They were the only drivers within half a second of SVG.

Van Gisbergen will be spotting for his Triple Eight replacement Will Brown, who is making his NASCAR Cup Series debut for Richard Childress Racing and raced out of the gates.

Despite being his first drive of the #33 Chevrolet Camaro and the twisty Sonoma, Brown was among the fastest of the all the stars.

Brown impressively set the third fastest time with a 1:13.389s lap.

This was only slower than leader Ryan Blaney and Gibbs with the top three covered by just 0.187s.

Cameron Waters is also making his NASCAR Cup Series debut in the Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing Ford Mustang and had a tougher time.

Waters got 20 laps under his belt in the #60 Mustang and ended up 35th, 1.6s down with a top time of 1.14.829.

But his session was heavily interrupted by a wild spin at Turn 1 where he lost control of his Mustang and rotated into the dirt, narrowly avoiding the wall.

On Sunday morning at 8.00 AEST the NASCAR Cup Series qualifying session will be held, while van Gisbergen will chase back to back wins from 10.00 AEST in the Xfinity Series.

Shane van Gisbergen won his first Xfinity Series race on the weekend in Portland, a week before Cam Waters and Will Brown join him as Cup Series drivers. The NASCAR racing was typically entertaining too.
