Wood apologises for Winterbottom quali mix up

By Thomas Miles

Rookie Ryan Wood will apologise to veteran Mark Winterbottom after blocking the Team 18 Camaro in qualifying.

After completing a hot lap to rise to safety in Q1, Wood carried too much speed into Turn 1 and went off.

But when the Kiwi rejoined the circuit, he did so in front of a charging Winterbottom, who had just started a push lap of his own.

With Macauley Jones also on the inside coming out of the pits, Winterbottom had nowhere to go and had to back out.

It proved extremely costly for the Team 18 veteran, who will start down in 23rd after getting knocked out in the first phase of qualifying.

Meanwhile, Wood got through all the way to Q3 and set the fourth fastest time, but suffered a three-place grid penalty for his part in the Winterbottom incident.

“Frosty” was a frustrated figure after being knocked out.

“Just two blokes, one coming out of the pits and one coming back on the track ruined my lap,” Winterbottom said.

“What do you do? Hopefully he gets done for that. That is just stupid coming back on.

“I would have got in (to Q2) for sure on new tyres but anyway.”

When asked for his opinion, 21-year-old Wood was an honest figure, putting his hand up for the incident and saying he will apologise to the 42-year-old.

“It was a pretty messy session on my behalf,” Wood said.

“I will go and apologise and say sorry to the crew because it was pretty unfortunate.

“I didn’t really see him at all and wrecked their qualifying and feel pretty gutted about that.

“We have a fast car and the race should be good even though we are starting a bit deeper than we would have liked.

“I learnt a lot from yesterday so the race should be a bit of fun.”

Wood will start seventh due to the penalty and will aim to continue making an impact in what has been an extremely impressive weekend so far.
