Kiwis Giltrap and Osborne fly in Asian series opener

Osborne and Giltrap

By Thomas Miles

The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia season opener belonged to a pair of Kiwis with Marco Giltrap and Clay Osborne dominating in Sepang.

Reigning champion Giltrap and newcomer Osborne took pole and won both races around the famous former Formula 1 circuit in Malaysia.

After a wet qualifying the track dried for the race and Jonathan Cecotto led early as Osborne slipped to third.

The rookie managed to get to second before handing over the duties to Giltrap, setting up a tense fight for the lead against Gavin Huang.

Giltrap had the answer and picked off his rival to cruise to a commanding win as Haung was relegated to third by the fast-finishing Miki Koyama.

The Objective Racing Kiwi machine in a league of its own.

Now starting in race 2, Giltrap pushed hard but could not quite stop Peter Li Zhicong from leading he field in the early laps.

But the Kiwi managed to return to the lead with 34 minutes to go and the Objective Racing machine was never troubled from there.

Osborne was able to protect the advantage built by Giltrap to complete the perfect weekend.

Impressive debutantes Koyama and Macau’s Charles Leong Hon Chio finished second overall behind the all Kiwi combination.

Round 2 of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia season will be in Australia at The Bend Motorsport Park on June 7-9.
