Waters confident of chasing important victory

By Thomas Miles

After skating to pole position in a slippery Shootout, Cameron Waters is confident his luck has turned and can challenge for victory in any conditions at Taupo.

For the second time in 2024, Waters will start from pole when the first ever Supercars race at Taupo begins at 13.05 AEST.

For the pole man, it will be a big moment with the Tickford driver hopeful of change in fortune.

Waters entered 2024 determined to pull off his biggest championship challenge yet after a strong finish to 2023 winning in the final two rounds.

However, the #6 Monster Mustang has had a shocking start to the season with the wheels literally coming off at Bathurst with a best result of 16th.

The Melbourne SuperSprint was a massive step in the right direction for Waters, who recorded three top 10 finishes from the four races.

However, the trip to Albert Park was still a forgetful one with the #6’s pursuit for victory destroyed on Saturday evening when a fight for the lead with Matt Payne ended in the barriers and another big repair job.

As a result Waters arrives at Taupo down in 16th in the championship and a massive 328 points behind leader Will Brown.

But things could be heading in the right direction with Waters punching out a strong lap before some assistance from the weather gods helped him secure a 24th career pole position.

Looking ahead to the first ever race at Taupo, Waters is hopeful the Shootout conditions is a sign lick is finally on his side.

But more importantly he believes his Monster Mustang will be fast in all conditions that could feature across 200km and 60 laps around Taupo this afternoon.

“It was obviously a pretty wild qualifying and I got pretty lucky with it getting wetter through the session,” he said.

“In saying that the car was pretty hooked up and felt good straight out of the gate.

“I have had a lot of bad luck this year so I will take some good luck now.

“The team did a great job (and) I think if it is going to be like this you pretty much leave it and back it over a race distance.

“It felt nice and balanced and braked pretty well over a race distance.

“We will just wipe it down and see what happens.

“The track is pretty cool and I think it is going to be a pretty spicy race in the wet or dry.”

Podcast: We’re going to Taupo… Tow Paw… Whatever. Supercars is back!

After a break that feels like months, the Supercars Championship is back and headed across the ditch to Taupo in the middle of the North Island. And yes, Brodie Kostecki will be there! As will the rain.

Somehow, the rain will also be in China for F1’s return to 中国. Philip Island was stunning on the weekend, just gone, if a little cold, but we chatted about whether Supercars should return to the land of penguins.

Plus, there’s more… all the news in the way only the Auto Action RevLimiter can deliver.
