Bolstered Carrera Cup field ready for special weekend

By Thomas Miles

The Porsche Carrera Cup Australia field has arrived in New Zealand for the first time and ready to race against some locals in a historic round at Taupo.

For the first time in the one-make series’ 21-year history, it will go racing on the other side of the Tasman this weekend.

In addition to the regular Kiwis of Fabian Coulthard and Marco Giltrap, the Aussie-based contingent will be joined by two more locals.

Experienced drivers Sam Fillmore and Rick Armstrong will steer some locally based 992 GT3 Cup Cars in Pro Am.

In a further Kiwi flavour the likes of Earl Bamber Motorsport and McElrea Racing also have NZ roots.

Amongst the regulars, they are chasing Harri Jones after he set a hot pace at the Albert Park opener.

He dominated the opening race before he and Dale Wood went head to head later on in the weekend and they are set to resume their rivalry across the ditch.

Marcos Flack won the dramatic final race while the likes of Bayley Hall, Jackson Walls and Ryder Quinn also showed strong speed.

The trip to Taupo will be a historic occasion being the first for the Carrera Cup in New Zealand.

However, it is not the first time the Carrera Cup has raced overseas having held a round at the home of the Malaysian Grand Prix, Sepang.

The round was held in 2017 alongside the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia where David Wall was victorious.

Only two drivers on the current grid Dean Cook and Dylan O’Keeffe also raced on that occasion.

Three races will be held throughout the weekend and all the action will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 506 and Kayo Sports in Australia, and Sky Sports New Zealand.
