Aston Martin chasing Red Bull mastermind Newey

By Thomas Miles

Rumours are circulating that Aston Martin has just made a big play in a bid to poach famous F1 designer Adrian Newey from Red Bull.

AUTOSPORT has reported Aston Martin chief Lawrence Stroll has made a “big-money contract offer” to Newey during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The legendary 65-year-old designer entered the F1 world with March/Leyton House in 1988 before moving to Williams and creating some of the most dominant and iconic cars ever in 1992 and 1993.

From 1997-2005 Newey was a key player at McLaren and immediately helped the team rise from a shocking 1996 to scoring wins in 1997 before back to back titles with Mika Hakkinen.

Since 2006 Newey has been the mastermind behind Red Bull’s rise from being a newcomer to the dominant force of Formula 1 and breaking all sorts of records with Max Verstappen.

All up Newey has won 13 drivers and 12 constructors titles and more than 200 Grands Prix.

If Stroll is able to secure his signature, it would be a massive boost in his dream to make Aston Martin a serious contender against the likes of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes.

However, Aston Martin is far from the first to try and lure Newey away from Red Bull and the 65-year-old only just signed a multi-year contract extension last year.

In addition to Newey, Aston Martin is also in the mix to chase Verstappen if the three-time world champion parts from Red Bull with his relationship with team principal Christian Horner on shaky grounds.

With Aston Martin now having the most modern Formula 1 factory and months away from having the most modern wind tunnel as well, a move to the Silverstone-based team in 2025 would allow Verstappen to get to know the team next year and be an important element in the definition of the 2026-spec chassis, bringing the knowledge he’s acquired at Red Bull, where the development of future cars revolves around his own driving preferences.
