Kvyat to go NASCAR Xfinity racing

Kvyat

By Thomas Miles

Shane van Gisbergen will have a former Formula 1 driver to beat when the NASCAR Xfinity Series heads to the Circuit of the Americas this weekend.

Former Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat joins the Xfinity field for the trip to COTA and will race the #07 Chevrolet Camaro of SS-Greenlight Racing.

The Russian driver with 110 Grands Prix between 2014-2020 under his belt and three podiums is no stranger to NASCAR.

The 29-year-old already has three NASCAR Cup Series starts next to his name in 2022 at the Indianapolis, Watkins Glen and Charlotte road courses.

His best result was 36th at the Indianapolis road course, while he has also taken in the NASCAR Xfinity Series before at the Charlotte “Roval” in 2022 finishing 15th.

Since his turbulent F1 career that crisscrossed between Toro Rosso and Red Bull, Kvyat has participated in the FIA World Endurance Championship and made his first Hypercar start with Lamborghini earlier this month in Qatar.

Kvyat is energised about his return to the NASCAR world at the track where he had a highest finish of 10th in the American Grand Prix.

“I’m excited to get back into NASCAR. I had a lot of fun in my previous races. The competition style is very different from F1 and World Endurance,” said Kvyat.

“I’m especially looking forward to my race at COTA. I’ve been there with F1, so it will be interesting to experience the track in a Camaro.”

SS-Greenlight Racing team owner Bobby Dotter cannot wait to welcome Kvyat to his team.

“I’m thrilled to have Daniil in the #07 at COTA. You can’t get much better than a former F1 driver for a road course ringer,” he said.

“Daniil is a great competitor, but he’s also a great partner for our team. He’s been in the shop every day since he got to Charlotte helping to get the car ready and getting to know the team.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what he does on the track.”
