Australian Drivers Championship on the line at Calder

Hyper Racer in action at calder

By Thomas Miles

The new Hyper Racer era of the prestigious Australian Drivers Championship crown will begin at Calder Park Raceway this weekend.

The opening round of the 2024 Australian Drivers Championship will be held at the famous Victorian circuit as part of the AASA Victorian Motor Racing Championship.

It will be a historic occasion as the historic Australian Drivers Championship title that was first on offer in 1957 will be fought for with Hyper Racer X1s for the first time.

This is due to Motorsport Australia’s most long-standing and prestigious championship and title appearing to have been kidnapped by its administrative and alternative motorsport sanctioning rival, the Australian Auto-Sport Alliance (AASA).

A field of 15 Hyper Racers will be going for glory across four 14-lap races in the two-day event.

Leading the charge will be 2023 Hyper Racer championship rivals Damon Sterling, Dean Crooke and Luke Klaver.

Sterling will be determined to defend his crown after wrestling the championship away from Crooke last year.

But there will also be some new names to look out for with former Formula 3 Australia champion Noah Sands and Ferrari Academy driver Hayden Crossland joining the field.

The Victorian V8s are also on the card for round 2 of its 2024 season.

This year the chase for glory is open after reigning champion Brian Finn has moved down to the Sportsman class.

As a result the likes of David Hender, Arthur Van Orsouw and David Radcliff took centre stage in the opener while Mark Kakouri may also be a contender.

In the 2 Litre Sports Sedans field, Steve Howard is defending his seventh championship from the likes of Warren Talbot and his freshly built Honda Civic, plus the Datson P510 of Andrew Pinkerton.

Victorian Super TT is also going racing around Calder.

Full event schedule can be found HERE while entry is free for fans wishing to watch the racing at Calder Park.
