JUNIOR drag racer, Cooper Plummer, is aiming for a hat-trick in the National Drag Racing Championship’s National Sportsman Championship Western Conference.

The Junior Dragster points leader, aged 14, won his first Gold Christmas Tree at the Westernationals earlier this month, which was his second first place of the season.

Now heading into the Ken Scroop Memorial event at the Sunset Strip in Koorlong, south-west of Mildura, tomorrow Saturday 9, and Sunday 10 March, The South Australian from Campbelltown will focus on achieving his third series win in 2024.

He said he’s “glad to be number one,” and his recent win at Perth Motorplex was a big one.

“It was my first Gold Christmas Tree, and also the biggest field I have won in,” he said. “I have raced in Perth five times and that was only the second time I have made it past the first round, so that was definitely great and then to go on to win it, that was amazing.

“It was cool also to top qualify as an inter-stater. it is a really tough and tight group over in WA and I was just hoping for top 10, but we were able to do it with a 8.00047 on an eight index in the third round which I was pretty happy about.

“I had a bit of luck along the way but I was also better than some people on both sides, on the tree and the dial-in. In the final I definitely had a bit of luck as I broke out a bit more than [Luca Lamattina] but he had the red light first.

“It would mean everything for me to win the championship. Hopefully we can go back to back this weekend.

“I love racing at Mildura. I have been racing there my whole career, it is where I got my license, it is basically my home track.

“I won there in September at the Sunset Nationals, so hopefully we can go again this weekend.”

Plummer will be the first person in his division to achieve three threes this series if he has success in Koorlong. He is also a finalist in the Seven News Department of Human Services Aboriginal Achievement Award, which will be presented in May.

Hooray, F1 is back. Boo, Max Verstappen wins. The Bahrain Grand Prix was a little underwhelming, but at least there was racing… and scandal. There was plenty of scandal, but we don’t do that stuff apparently, so we don’t talk about Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner and Jos Verstappen.
