TWO weekends of competition in Tassie kicks off this Sunday with round one of Race Tasmania in Baskerville.

On 10 March, the two-round ACL Hyundai Excel Racing Tasmania $10,000 championship begins, with drivers not only competing to win the biggest Hyundai racing prize ever to be awarded in Australia, but the inaugural Garry Rogers Trophy.

Garry Rogers has been involved in motor racing for more than 60 years, firstly as a competitor then as a team and category owner,” a statement from organisers of Hyundai Excel Racing Tasmania said.

“Throughout the more than 60 years, Garry has become known for his “can do” frank and no nonsense attitude and for giving young people a go.

“The prestigious Garry Rogers Trophy recipient will be selected by Garry for the performance over both weekends of Race Tasmania with Garry not only watching the racing but wandering the pits and observing and talking to the competitors.

“The selection criteria for the trophy includes attitude, talent, race craft and sportsmanship.

This is to be a perpetual award and suited perfectly to the Hyundai Excel category which sees many young drivers making their way from karting to circuit racing at a reasonable cost point.”

Also on this weekend’s Race Tasmania program are Tassie Tin Tops and Trans AM, TCR and Drifting demonstrations.

Baskerville tickets are $15 or free for any Race Tasmania ticket holder. Visit racetasmania.com.au for more information.

Hooray, F1 is back. Boo, Max Verstappen wins. The Bahrain Grand Prix was a little underwhelming, but at least there was racing… and scandal. There was plenty of scandel, but we don’t do that stuff apparently, so we don’t talk about Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner and Jos Verstappen.
