Mostert denied by Feeney in tight shootout

Chaz Mostert’s valiant attempt to end Triple Eight’s grip on P1 was denied by a clutch Broc Feeney, but only just in a tense Top 10 Shootout.
With a flying run across the top of the Mountain, Mostert was able to knock off Will Brown to be leading the way before qualifying leader Feeney ended the session.
Just 0.019s separated Feeney and the #25 WAU Mustang at the second split but the speed of the #88 Camaro in the first and third sectors made the difference.
Feeney took his first pole of the year with a 2:06.5465, just 0.0988s ahead of Mostert to ensure Triple Eight continued its perfect Bathurst 500 weekend and a Camaro v Mustang front row.
Brown will share the second row with James Golding who led the majority of the session.
The Top 10 Shootout proved to be a setup challenge with track conditions completely different to the morning qualifying session.
Whilst qualifying was held under cool, overcast skies, the sun was shining brightly in time for the Shootout and reduced track grip.
Below is a rundown on how each driver fared in the one-lap dash around the Mountain.
9: Nick Percat 2:07.4624
For the second day in a row Nick Percat opened the Shootout in the MSR Camaro and left nothing at the top of the mountain.
He put a clean lap together to open the session with the solid marker of a 2:07.4624, which was a tenth off what he did in Saturday’s one lap dash.
Percat revealed he was chasing a 2m06s lap.
“I wanted to keep it in the 2m06s and tried. Probably took more risks than I did this morning,” he said.
“(Track grip) was very low. Two shootouts in two days is epic.”
8: Will Davison 2:07.425
Davison overcame Percat by the barest of margins with a clean lap despite coming close at McPhillamy Park.
In the end the DJR driver just edged ahead of Percat by 0.04s.
“The lap was pretty clean,” Davison said.
“I was a bit unsure how to attack it with the sun out and how much slower the track would be and you don’t want to overdo it.
“Not too bad.”
6: Jack Le Brocq 2:07.3817
Driving in his 200th race Le Brocq made his first Shoot out appearance for Erebus and pushed hard going across the top.
Le Brocq matched Davison across the first two actors but snuck ahead in the run down Conrod to edge clear again by 0.04s.
“It is pretty greasy out there at the moment and very different to what we had earlier,” he said.
“Had a bit of fun with a few slides.”
7: Thomas Randle 2:07.3907
Randle participating in his first Shootout rode high over the kerbs at Hell Corner and under the tree which allowed him to go up by
0.001s up on Le Brocq
But his momentum was cut short by a whack of the wall going through the snaking Esses towards Forests Elbow and he fell agonisingly short of Le Brocq’s benchmark.
Just 0.0090s separated cars #9 and #55 and Randle lamented the brush with the concrete.
“I gave it a little kiss,” Randle confirmed.
“I put it on the line which is what you have got to do by unfortunately not quite enough.”
4: James Golding 2:06.9545
James Golding brought the session into the 2m06s window with a scintillating lap.
Like qualifying, Golding set a purple first sector but not by much.
However, the #31 made up massive speed with a swift run up and down the mountain. He gained two tenths in the middle sector alone and confined the momentum through the final sector to smash the previous runners by four tenths.
“I am pretty happy with that one,” Golding said.
“Just tried to keep it nice and tidy. The track is a bit hotter than qualifying so it was a bit tricky but I am stoked.”
5: David Reynolds 2:07.1609
David Reynolds had a mini practice run by nailing a last minute lap to secure the Shootout berth after a long time in the garage in qualifying.
At the start of the lap he used all of the road coming out of Griffins and it paid off as he beat Golding by a tenth across the first sector.
However, Reynolds lost that time across the top with a little slide at Skyline and was 0.05s down at the second split.
In the end he fell two tenths short of Golding, falling short of a 2m06s.
“It is pretty wild out here,” Reynolds said.
“The track has changed a lot but it was a good enough lap.”
10: Anton De Pasquale 2:07.5117
Anton De Pasquale was the fourth fastest in qualifying but struggled to replicate that in the shootout.
Was only 0.094s down on Golding at the first split before losing three tenths across the top.
A little slide on the exit of the elbow and brushing the wall hurt more momentum down Conrod and he ended up last, almost a second off the pole pace.
2: Chaz Mostert 2:06.6453
After using third gear rather than second at Griffins he nailed the first sector to gain a tenth on Golding.
On Saturday Mostert had great speed across the top and this remained the case as he overcame the #31’s impressive second sector.
He did not stop pushing hard dancing to lower the benchmark by a huge three tenths.
Despite the impressive number, he revealed he was not perfectly happy with the lap.
“That one was probably a little bit cleaner the car was gripped top
“Didn’t get the test out of it and a little bit gutted.”
3: Will Brown 2:06.7237
Brown continued to be very fast in the opening sector to gain 0.165s on Mostert.
Had to manhandle the car dancing out of the Dipper and into the Elbow and lost two tenths in the middle sector.
Despite having a top speed that was 4km/h faster than Mostert and recording the fastest final sector, he fell agonisingly short of the #25 WAU Mustang, just 0.07s.
“Was not a bad lap, it is getting hot out here being 1.5s off what we did in quali.”
1: Broc Feeney 2:06.5465
After finishing second best in Saturday’s Shootout, Broc Feeney was determined to convert his provisional pole at the second attempt.
Feeney used all the road coming out of the Cutting and it paid off getting the fastest opening sector
After a solid journey over the top, just 0.019s separated the pair at the second split and a faultless run in the final sector made the difference.
