MotoGP announce cancellation of 2024 Argentina GP

MotoGP has announced the cancellation of the 2024 Argentina Grand Prix due to “current circumstances” in the country. 

The event, originally set to be held at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit, was scheduled to take place on April 7 as the third round of the 2024 MotoGP season.

The event will not be rescheduled in 2024, leaving an additional week between Round 2 in Portimão and the revised Round 3 in Austin, Texas.

The decision coincides with the current economic crisis being faced in Argentina, with protests raging on against new implementations made by President Javier Milei.

As it stands, at least 40% of Argentina’s population is living in poverty, prompting tens and thousands of protesters to march against the cuts made by the recently elected President after Milei said “shock treatment” would be needed to combat the issues.

In a statement issued by MotoGP, the sport “confirm[ed] the cancellation of the 2024 Argentina GP”.

“Due to the current circumstances in Argentina, the Promoter of the event has communicated that it is currently unable to guarantee the services required for the Grand Prix to take place in 2024 at MotoGP™ standards.

“This event will not be replaced on the 2024 calendar. MotoGP™ hopes to return to race at Termas de Rio Hondo in 2025.”

The MotoGP season is set to kick off in Qatar on the 10th of March, running through to the final race of the season in Valencia in November.
