Aussie teenager set for big Moto2 step-up in 2024

By Timothy Neal

Australian teenager Senna Agius – 2023 FIM Moto2 European champion – is preparing to step up into a full-time international seat with Husqvarna Intact GP in the Moto2 world championship.

That means there will be four Aussies across the board in MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3, with Jack Miller continuing with KTM, and Jacob Roulstone for Red Bull KTM Tech3, whilst Phillip Island podium getter Joel Kelso will race for Boe Motorsports after racing with CFMoto Racing Prustel GP in ’23.

Agius was dominant on the European scene in the Moto2, winning eight races for the Husqvarna Intact GP Junior Team, beating Andorran rider Xavi Cardelus by 67 points to take the title, which was enough for the team to elevate him onto the world stage.

Agius celebrates his European championship after winning the season finale

“I am very grateful to have the opportunity to move up with this team. I just have to say thank you for this incredible opportunity and thank you to all the bosses and everyone involved for believing in me,” Agius said.

“It will be my rookie season and I still have so much to learn, but it has already been a good time in Moto2 and I am so happy to move up now.”

In the lead up to taking out the 2023 European crown, the 18-year-old has been at it for a number of years, racing in the Australian Supersport 300 in 2019 as well as the Japanese Moto3.

Agius spent two years in the European Moto2 field, finishing second to German rider Lukas Tulovic in 2022 to announce his credentials going forward.

In a dominant year in the European Moto2, Agius won eight of his nine races whilst missing out on one round to comfortably top the standings.

Team Principal of Husqvarna Intact GP Jurgen Lingg says that Agius has a mountain of potential in him as he steps onto the world stage and straight into the second tier.

“We made this decision together with our main partners and we are very happy that Senna will now make the step into the World Championship with us as a regular rider,” Lingg says.

“He is just 18 years old, which certainly makes it an exciting challenge for him. Of course, he will also be given the necessary time to adapt at World Championship level, but I think he has everything he needs to do that.

“We are sure that sooner or later he will get good results, because we see a lot of potential in him.”

The 2024 MotoGP season kicks off on March 10 for the Qatar Grand Prix at the Lusail International Circuit.
