Cameron seals S5000 sweep and double trophy

By Timothy Neal

Aaron Cameron took out another shortened S5000 affair at the VAILO Adelaide 500, drawing the curtain on the season and confirming both the Gold Star and Tasman Series title.

There was a good challenge from Blake Purdie early, but these machines don’t particularly like the chicane kerbing  and it proved as such to end the race with Cameron leading Jordan Boys and Ben Bargwanna over the line.

The final S5000 race of the season got going with the new Drivers Champion on pole, who was also looking to seal a second drivers title, with teammate Jordan Boys, Blake Purdie and Ben Bargwanna on pole.

Webster would also start down the back after getting penalised for a weigh in after yesterday’s race.

Cameron took the chicane first with Bargwanna taking third, but there was an immediate safety car in the 12 lap final, with visiting North Island Kiwi, Caleb Ngatoa, going into the fence on a driver error after crowding Carroll and clipping wheels.

Cameron held the field back on the restart and put the foot down on lap 4 across the main straight, whilst Boys took second over Purdie and Bargwanna.

Nathan Herne also jumped into fifth over Carroll and Webster in a good restart in the all-red GRM car.

Purdie got some big air off the chicane and it cost him with a hit on the wall at Wakefield St with some damage to the pushrod over the kerbing to negate his steering, with another safety called on lap 7.

Cameron also took a whack on the tyre bundle, and perhaps took slight damage, but it was yet to be seen until the Purdie car left the track on the flatbed.

Unfortunately the flag dropped on the race from that point, and it gave Cameron just the second ever Tasman Series round sweep, with the GRM youngster coming away with both the Gold Star and Tasman Series trophy.
