Heinrich wins again, heartbreak for Bowe

By Thomas Miles

Guest racer Joel Heinrich collected another win in Adelaide, while there was heartbreak for John Bowe in his penultimate race as a full-time TCM driver.

Bowe was fighting up front until he spun by Marcus Zukanovic at turn 9 and with the Rare Spares Torana unable to make it back to the pits, the race ended under the control of the Safety Car.

It ensured Heinrich collected another win, having dominated the journey ahead of fast-finishing Ryan Hansford and Steven Johnson.

Heinrich converted pole as Johnson made a blazing start, flying from fourth to second in the BRUT Mustang and importantly ahead of Hansford.

The reigning champion was slightly caught napping and lost second to Johnson as Heinrich blazed into the distance already 2s up the road.

By turn 9 Hansford’s slide continued as he lost third to the late braking Fisher and dropped to fourth.

It took until lap 3 for Hansford to regain the place with a smart move at turn 8.

This left Fisher under pressure to Bowe as the Torana tussle for the minors continued.

Hansford was now on the charge and turned his attention to Johnson.

He was all over the back of the Mustang and made a big dive down the inside at turn 9.

Hansford made it stick to snatch second while Fisher tried to follow through and only just avoided spinning Johnson.

But Fisher’s fight did not last long as his charge was cut short by a flat tyre which forced him to undergo a lengthy pit with the trolley jack getting a run.

Adam Garwood had a spin at the end of Wakefield Street but gassed it up quickly, while Peter Burnitt spun at turn 9.

More drama was to come at the hairpin as Zukanovic served Bowe twice which sent the retiring veteran into a spin.

He tried to rejoin the field but could not restart his #18 Torana which brought out the safety car.

With some help from the officials Bowe got going again, but only got as far as turn 13.

This ensured the race would conclude under the control of the safety car.

The Touring Car Masters season will conclude with race 3 on 11.55 AEDT on Sunday with Johnson in the box seat to hold off Hansford and win the title.
