McLeod to pilot SVG Falcon in V8TC finale

By Timothy Neal

Up-and-coming Aussie racing talent Cameron McLeod will jump in the ex-Stone Brothers Racing/Shane van Gisbergen FG Falcon for the Kumho V8 Touring Cars finale at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International in November.

The Super3 front-runner at the recent Bathurst 1000 round winner will return to Mount Panorama in the striking blue Falcon, which was once piloted by Shane van Gisbergen in 2012 during his time with Stone Brothers Racing.

The car was previously owned by one of McLeod’s backers and mentors, Bradley Neill, who also used to run the Falcon in the Kumho V8 series, and is the owner of McLeod’s Super3 Nissan Altima.

Shane van Gisbergen piloted the Stone Brothers FG Falcon in the 2012 V8 Supercars season.

His series debut on November 10-12 is another addition to an impressively growing CV for the young driver, who has always been eager and willing to race as many cars as possible.

“Brad Neill, my car owner from Super3 asked me if I wanted to race at Bathurst again in his FG Falcon, I couldn’t say no, more laps at Bathurst is always a positive.” McLeod said.

“It is an FG Falcon that Shane van Gisbergen drove, it was his car and Brad also drove it in the Kumho Series when he raced as well.

“You always want to win at Bathurst, I will always go there with that mentality and see how it goes and what we can come away with.”

Outside of his Super3 duties this season, McLeod has also raced in the MARC Cars Australia series at Sandown, where he took out the round win in dominant weekend.

McLeod, the grandson of 1987 Bathurst 1000 winner Peter Mcleod, has been honing his skills under the watchful eyes of a consortium of local and international backers.

Alongside Neill, his support network contains former British Touring Car (BTCC) champion Matt Neal, former BTCC and Australian Super Tourers driver James Kaye, and veteran TCM and MARC cars driver Kieth Kassulke.

McLeod also drove the (then new) BMW M4 GT4 at the Dubai 24 Hours at the start of the year alongside Kassulke and Kaye where they scored an impressive class P2, with the young driver sharing the track with the likes of MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi and a host of world class GT drivers.

McLeod was part of the Kassulke led BMW M4 GT4 team that took a class 2nd at the Dubai 24 Hour in January

Currently, Mcleod sits third in the Super3 championship after a series of penalties and late Sandown misfortune (2 retirements) has cost him the title lead against his chief rival Jobe Stewart, despite the gun Queenslander having won six races.

But despite his various setbacks, McLeod has often been seen mixing the Gen2 machinery in the Dunlop series, with his qualifying efforts having been particularly impressive, having taken nine of 10 pole positions along with his three round wins at Perth, Townsville, and Bathurst.

Following his November 10-12 drive at the Bathurst International, McLeod will take on the season finale Super3 round at the Adelaide 500 on November 25-26.
