National Sports Sedans set for Bathurst 1000 finale

By Timothy Neal

The Precision National Sports Sedans will have their final Bathurst 1000 outing this morning, with some intriguing stories to play out.

Although the two races so far haven’t seen as many laps as fans would have hoped for, the scene is set for an intruding Race 3 at 11:15 for a 20 minute outing.

Both the races so far have been flag interrupted affairs as the drivers and powerful machinery have done what they came here to do…go racing and try to get a win at Bathurst!

It’s a pretty big race for a few of the contenders, with Tony Ricciardello having the chance to put one hand on the championship trophy ahead of the Gold Coast finale.

Although there weren’t too many laps in Race 2, make no mistake, Jordan Caruso came hard at the legendary Sports Sedans driver. Ricciardello’s speed down the straights was too much for the Audi which hasn’t had the speed on race day after Caruso’s blistering pole effort on Thursday.

You don’t get to say this too often, but look out for the very back of the grid today, as Steve Tamasi and his Holden Calibra will be on a tear and hoping for a green run.

The former national champion has repaired his wing mounts after having to sit out Race 2, and deserves a bit of luck after a stuttering season on the mechanical front.  How far can he get in 20 minutes?

Behind the front runners, there’s going to be a right scrap between a large bunch of big bangers.

After Angus Fogg stormed onto the podium in his 1970 Fastback, championship contender Ashley Jarvis will be looking for some revenge after being pipped before the final yellow flew, and another podium could see the Monaro Queenslander still have a shot at securing in the championship by year’s end.

The others that will be battling in that group are Ryan Humfrey, Brad Shiels, Mark Duggan, and Steven Lacey.

Unfortunately for the finale, some of the competitors missing will by Nick Smith and Graham Smith in the RX7’s, and Birol Cetin after his chev took on big damage yesterday.

AUTO ACTION’s tip…Caruso to secure a win in a green race over Ricciardello, whilst Tamasi scores a podium from the rear of the field.
